Karen Hilltribes Trust Gratitude and Action on World Health Day!

The 7th of April is UN World Health Day.

This day recognises the challenges communities face to better health and access to healthcare. This year’s theme is ‘My health, my right’.

Many us are fortunate to have access to free healthcare, access to emergency support and access to things that ensure good health, such as clean water, food and sanitation.

For the Karen, good health is hampered by their lack of access to safe and adequate supplies of water. They are also disadvantaged due to poverty and rural isolation. Not having enough to eat is often deadly for the most vulnerable in society, such as children and the elderly. Another health concern in Thailand are parasitic infections, and these often impact children the most but leave life long damage.

Together, we help more than 3500 people every year directly improve their health and well-being.

How Do We Improve Community Health?

Providing year round access to enough water for a person’s basic needsProviding access to cleaner, safer water for human consumptionProviding hygiene and first aid training for villages to improve knowledge and practiceBuilding latrines to reduce waste in the environment and the potential of diseases spreadingImproving access to farmland to increase crop diversity and food securityImproving incomes so families can afford cost related to healthcareProviding deworming programmes for Karen childrenFunding scholarships for Karen nursesProviding first aid kits to villages

Hygiene training has helped villagers improve their knowledge and practice and their health.

Filtering water to ensure it is safe for consumption.

KHT’s system brings water to the village so it is always available.

People no longer have to walk to rivers or streams to collect water.

First Aid training has helped villagers feel more empowered.

Latrines help improve health and dignity.

KHT is only able to support Karen people through your generosity and also through the cooperation and trust of the Karen villages we work with. We are happy to be contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and supporting the all too often marginalised Karen people. We hope you will continue with us on this journey and donate so next year, we can report more successes and better health for more communities!
