After 2 weeks of intense work and experiencing life in a Karen village, the Gordonstoun volunteers returned home and the village of Ban Hua Mae Sa Kud was sad to see them go.
The village now has a reliable and safe water system that will provide enough clean drinking water and enough water for uses vital needs such as cooking, washing and cleaning. KHT also built 20 new latrines in the village for the families that had poor toilet facilities or had no toilets of their own.
We are pleased to report that the initial water tests show the filter system is working well and we were thanked by the villagers for ending their struggles in having to pay for water, constantly having to repair and manage damage to the old water source and for ending the possibility of conflicts due to water sharing.
The villagers were also grateful for the presence of the Gordonstoun School volunteers and they enjoyed working with them and spending time eating together as well as sharing each other’s cultures.
The volunteer braved working in the heat, being far from home and some surprisingly special guests (snake and bugs!) in their accommodation, and they made a huge effort to connect with the villagers.
KHT are grateful to Man Hua Mae Sa Kud for hosting our volunteers and we are grateful to the Gordonstoun School for choosing our projects. The experience was enjoyed by everyone and it has helped us to construct the WASH system in the village and fundraise for our WASH projects in other marginalised villages!
